May for Humble Pie was all about Ronald McDonald. We cooked, we served, we assembled care packages and we left our tiny mark on an organization that does enormous good for families around the world. Yes, Ronald McDonald does serve up perfect packages of food and fun for our little ones….at least my girls think so…. but looking past the golden arches, their name carries much more weight and far greater significance in other facets of the organization.
Ronald McDonald House Charities provides a “home away from home” for families whose children are receiving medical care. This wonderful organization takes the financial burdon off families who are already dealing with large medical bills, they provide a safe and comfortable homelike setting for those traveling from out of town and they offer the same hospitality for local families that may not want to sleep across town when their child is staying at a hospital. The homes offer complimentary meals and necessities provided by heartfelt volunteers. They provide tips and advice for navigating a new city and much emotional support during a family’s journey. RMHC also sponsors scholarships for students across the US and grants to other organizations focusing on the needs of children. They are widespread in the United States and are making their presence known all over the world. It is truly a remarkable charity and one I would encourage everyone to service in some capacity.
For Humble Pie, it was a perfect fit. By helping the RMHC our children could help other children feel a little comfort during a very tough season. Kids may not always understand the extent to which they are giving back, but they certainly can relate to feeling crummy and being thankful for those special moments that make them feel better. We are hopeful that our care packages provided just that. One very special aspect of this project was partnering with an adoptive parents’ group in Louisville, KY. Their children helped assemble our care packages. Many of these families have personally used RMHC services during their childrens’ transitions into their families. They were eager to give back to an organization that gave much to them. A special thanks to each of these families that inspired our May Humble Pie service project!
In Louisville and Lexington, our Humble Pie groups gathered together, equipped with toiletries and snacks which our children assembled into goody bags to deliver to families staying at each city’s RMHC chapter. We were able to make enough for each family to receive one! The children put their special mark on the project by decorating the bags before assembling. We also secured with clothes pins adorned with our website address, to allow families the opportunity to learn about our mission. It was a fun project for our little ones and a wonderful charity to work with!
In Louisville, to pair with our care package project, we organized a group of moms to make dinner at our local Ronald McDonald House. What a heartwarming experience. We planned and prepared the meal in their kitchen and served 60-75 family members. A little home-cooking away from home to hopefully add comfort into a stressful day. If you would like to do the same, you can visit their webpage to sign up. I highly recommend this experience.
Finally, I have to note that after completing our service projects, we received a Facebook “thank you” from one parent who got our care package at the Louisville RHMC. Thank you for reaching out to us! We always wonder how our little acts have impacted those we serve so it was incredibly inspiring to I know we positively impacted a life. Our children’s tiny hands are being recognized for their hard work. Great job Humble Pie volunteers! You are making a difference!

Lexington was very fortunate to have the Lexington Ronald McDonald House Executive Director, Sarah Warner Lister, visit their project site and shed some light on why RMHC is so important. The kids received a firsthand education to help them understand the positive impact they are making in the lives of other children. Thank you for your support Sarah!
