April showers bring May flowers…. or so we hope! In April, Humble Pie volunteers visited Creasey Mahan Nature Preserve with dozens of flowers in tow. We planted violets and pansies on their property in honor of Arbor Day. Now, coincidentally we were volunteering on Creasey Mahan’s Spring Wildflower Day, hence the flower planting on a day that traditionally serves trees. We were determined to dig into nature, one way or another! We came with shovels in tow, dug through heaps of mulch (which the kids thoroughly enjoyed) and plopped our rainbow of colors into the earth. Our small donation added pretty pops of color throughout the flower beds. The kids enjoyed getting their hands dirty and us parents enjoyed wiping them clean…. and seeing their sweet smiles. We hope our flowers are still flourishing today!

After our project, my girls and I enjoyed the wildflower activities the preserve had set up in their Field House. We “painted” pictures using grass, dandelions and violets. We also planted flower seeds in soil we stuffed inside an ice cream cone. The children were able to take it home to plant in their own gardens. As the cone biodegrades, the plants grow. Very neat and creative projects that my girls loved. It was fun to see them explore new ways to enjoy nature. Check out Creasey Mahan Events to discover other ways to get your family into nature this year!
Our Lexington Humble Pie volunteers also honored Arbor Day this month by delivering flowers and plants of their choice to residents at Mayfair Manor nursing home. The residents enjoyed visiting with the kids and appreciated their beautiful tokens of spring, which brightened their rooms. Our volunteers were able to spread the beauty of nature and bring lots of smiles along the way!
We created these project to help our children gain an appreciation for their environment and a dedication to protecting it. Thank you to all of our little green thumbs! We had fun, messy and productive days!
