Babes In Toyland….
I’ve never seen it but I will venture to say that our holiday toy drive has given a brand new meaning to the plot behind this movie. Throw in a U-haul, some holiday tunes and 8 young samaritans and you’ve got our Louisville Babes In Toyland rendition. Complete with giggles and potty breaks, or course.
WOW we had an amazing turnout for our toy drive. We expected to fill up the backs of a few small SUV’s, but the incredible generosity of our school families dictated a much different approach to deliveries. We had so many toys donated that my husband had to rent a u-haul for our distribution day! We were all blown away by the benevolence shown and dedication to helping our community members in need. One word sums it up. AWESOME!
For our 2014 toy drive, Humble Pie partnered with St. James Preschool (PeWee Valley), The Temple Preschool (Louisville) and Kenwood Station Elementary (Crestwood) to collect new and used toys and stuffed animals. The initial Humble Pie ideal was to encourge our children to donate their own gently used toys, teaching them the importance of caring for less fortunate children by sharing their cherished items with them. A tough exercise for the youngest ones but we persevered thanks to devoted parents instilling compassion into young hearts. Through the toy collection process we received thousands of used toys, hundreds of stuffed animals and dozens of brand new toys. Thus, our initiative changed to include donations for 3 charities instead of just 1. Our humble cause morphed into one of serious magnitude, allowing us to touch the lives of dozens of additional children and hopefully bringing smiles to all of their faces. This was a highly impactful activity for all involved!
Our used toys were donated to St. Joseph Children’s Home, “a loving home for Louisville’s most vulnerable children.” This wonderful organization was established over 150 years ago and currently serves our community with foster care/adoption programs and offers residential therapy for abused and neglected children. They will use our donations as part of their foster program, sending appropriate toys to foster families for use with their children.
Our used stuffed animals were donated to Bears On Patrol, a program through Kosair Charities that allows police officers to keep stuffed animals in their patrol cars for children who have experienced traumatic situations. Such a fantastic cause. They will use our donations to fill loads of patrol cars.
Our new toys were donated to The Ronald McDonald House, which provides a home for families with children receiving medical care in our community. They provide a comfortable home setting at little or no cost for families that are taken away from the comforts of their own homes while getting treatment for their children. Their care team will use our donations for their toy rooms and specific family needs.
Humble Pie would like to extend a very heartfelt thank you to all of the families who helped our toy drive become a HUGE success! We look forward to expanding the initiative even further in 2015…. Happy New Year, Y’all!
