We talk about the homeless a lot in our house. So much lately that our girls are playing “homeless sisters” as they pack their backpacks for bedtime in sleeping bags and ask mommy for snacks to stash in their pockets. This really happens. We have a 3 and a 4 year old and this…. is how they learn.
I explain that homeless people have no homes and my daughters respond,
“So mommy do they live outside?”
“Well some of them.”
“Like camping under the moon?”
“Well not exactly.”
“Do they roast marshmallows?”
“Um, probably not.”
“Well can they live in our house?”
“Honey, I wish they could.”
Simple solution, right? For too hefty a problem. In fact, did you know that over 8,500 homeless individuals reside in Louisville? 1200 of them are children. Men, women, children, families with no homes, no food, no money, no hope. One Louisville organization works tirelessly to aid this population. Wayside Christian Mission will house, feed and clothe over 600 people every night and they provide 2000 meals every single day. Wayside’s many programs help homeless individuals rehabilitate and return to the community as self-serving citizens. This month Humble Pie decided to help in Wayside’s relief efforts by making care packages for our homeless community.
Thanks to over 20 little helpers, we donated 200 care packages to Wayside! All of our children were very engaged and enthusiastic to help. They worked tirelessly until all bags were completed and even asked for more! Super impressive to this mom who knows the challenge of enticing my little ones to work long at anything that doesn’t involve stickers or fruit snacks. Lucky for them we had enough fruit snacks left over to reward everyone for their hard work. Yum. We had a determined bunch with lots of love in their hearts!

Our finished product. 200 care packages!
Thank you to all who participated! All the moms who jumped in to help organize and guide our children. All of the wonderful donations that allowed us to fund this project. And most importantly, all of the young samaritans who opened their hearts and expanded their minds even further last Friday, learning about a community in need and helping in their own sweet way. Our January Humble Pie project is complete!
